SOLID OAK BIG BAND
The Solid Oak Big Band was formed in xxxx by a group of experienced amateur adult musicians who love playing music arranged for big bands. It is an 18-piece ?standard? big band with vocalist. The Band is based in Western Conecticut and rehearses weekly at the Simsbury middle achool.
Outdoor Summer Concerts
During the summer the Band plays outdoor concerts that are free to the public and are sponsored by towns throughout the Greater Hartford-Springfield area.
Increasingly, audiences attending outdoor summer big band performances expect to hear music from the Swing Era years of the xxxx's and World War II. The Band?s summer concert repertoire consists mostly of this music. Its instrumental numbers include dance tunes made popular by Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Artie Shaw, among others. Other instrumentals and vocals are songs that were top hits in the xxxx's and xxxx's from such composers as George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, and Cole Porter. All of this music is danceable, should audience members want to do so. If appropriate, depending on the audience and the concert length, the Band can also play a few modern tunes, such as jazz arrangements featuring individual soloists or sections, Latin tunes, or rock tunes arranged for big bands.
Holiday Concerts
During the December holiday season the Band plays indoor concerts for retirement communities, churches, schools, and other institutions. The Band has a full selection of instrumental and vocal holiday favorites arranged in swing, jazz, Latin and rock styles.
Private Functions
Solid Oak is a non-profit, charitable organization whose purpose is to play public concerts. However, the same musicians play the same music and more under another name, Jazz Express, for private functions such as weddings, banquets, and large parties. Waltzes, polkas, rumbas, cha-chas, and other types of dance tunes are added to the Band?s swing and ballad repertoire to provide a full range of dance music.
