SUMMARY: We are seeking a highly experienced Chief Actuary to fill a critical role in our First Party organization. The First Party group includes our National Property, Inland Marine, Ocean Marine, and Boiler & Machinery businesses. This position reports to the Chief Actuary for Business Insurance, and serves on the Actuarial & Analytics Leadership Team for Business Insurance. The Chief Actuary for First Party sets standards for, and oversees all actuarial functions in the organization. This leader will manage a team of actuaries and actuarial support staff in Hartford, St. Paul, and NY/NJ. The position is part of the executive leadership team for the business and is expected to contribute to building and executing upon business strategies. Equally important are the general business skills that the candidate brings to the role. This position requires that the candidate be able to bring both a broad business as well as actuarial perspective to the First Party organization. More specifically, the person in this position will be responsible for: - Providing strategic perspective on business issues; identifying strategic opportunities for change; creating a clear vision for how actuarial can shape the business; working in collaboration with business leaders across First Party (strong communication skills are required) - Proactively challenging existing processes and leveraging enterprise resources; recognizing weaknesses, strengths, threats, and opportunities facing the business; developing contingency plans and anticipating unexpected events or obstacles that can alter business results. - Providing functional expertise to the organization on key initiatives (e.g., pricing strategy, rate adequacy and segmentation, price optimization, benchmark and other pricing tools; reserving and reporting; and advanced analytics.) - Participating in monthly and quarterly reviews of business results and earnings. - Building business relationships with actuarial and non-actuarial partners. - Providing expertise to enterprise-wide initiatives (e.g., Enterprise Risk Management, Product Innovation) - Provide leadership to a staff of more than 15 employees. QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE - College graduate and a Fellow in the CAS - 10+ years of Property Casualty actuarial experience - Considerable management and leadership experience - Exposure to multiple lines of business - Experience in pricing, reserving, analysis and other actuarial functions - An understanding of complex actuarial/financial models - Knowledge of Enterprise Risk Management Travelers is an equal opportunity employer.
